Transport Studies of Atom-Defined Silicon Quantum Devices

Robert Wolkow has an opening for a postdoc with expert knowledge of low temperature, ultra-high vacuum, scanning tunneling microscopy, and or experience with transport studies of semiconductor quantum dot devices.

We have established efficient, AI-automated atom-defined fabrication procedures and have used those to show diverse classical and quantum phenomena can be controlled and probed in this way. This routine access to atom crafted structures provides a game-changing approach to the kind of physics long pursued through normal lithographic means in the study, for example of semiconductor quantum dots and qubits. Our atom-scale approach offers enormous advantages – such as the ability to make any number of identical structures, enormous splitting energies of 100s of meV rather than 100s of micro eV, and clear paths to CMOS integration.

PhD Student Position: Breeding for Nitrogen Use Efficiency in the Context of Crop Rotation – University of Saskatchewan

The postdoc will learn our procedures and apply those with our 2 state of the art multi-probe ultra high vacuum tools to exactingly fabricate, image at the atom scale and measure transport properties of proto quantum devices. Examples of planned devices include an atom-defined SET that is free of the stray charge limitations that plague other designs, and, a Pauli spin-blockade magnetometer that can be extremely portable and room temperature operable while requiring only electronic controls (no lasers as for NV center-based sensors).

All of our work is coordinated with Quantum Silicon Inc which stands ready to commercialize our IP. Our academic work has direct connections to emerging applications and as a result, PDFs and students departing from our group have readily secured jobs at QSi, Google, D-Wave and 1-QBit to name some.

University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship for 2024

The candidate will have most of the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics or Chemical Physics or equivalent;
  • Extensive experience in atom resolving ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling or atomic force microscopy;
  • A demonstrated publication record of STM/AFM studies on semiconductor surfaces;
  • Proficiency in LabVIEW and Python;
  • Experience necessary to operate our atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopes and the associated ultra-high vacuum devices to perform expert level, atom-resolved measurements.
  • Experience with nanoscale cryogenic transport measurements

Responsibilities will include:

  • Design and conduct experiments related to the multiprobe STM/AFM analyses of silicon surfaces;
  • Perform complete analysis of the results and prepare presentations, reports and publish papers on the findings;
  • Design and build automated data collection, instrument control, and research solutions;
  • Assist in supervision of graduate and undergraduate students;
  • Contribute to setting research directions and assist in establishing research methods, data evaluation protocols and standards.

The position will be based at the University of Alberta. Our labs are state of the art and we offer a flexible and supportive working environment with competitive wages.
